“Day-Zero” Droughts Could Hit Much Sooner Than Expected

A major climate study reported by CNN warns that extreme water scarcity events known as “day-zero droughts” — where water demand substantially outstrips supply and reservoirs drop to levels that risk public water systems failing — could begin occurring this decade or early in the 2030s rather than late in the century. These droughts are driven by a combination of prolonged low rainfall, reduced river flows and reservoir levels, rising temperatures that increase evaporation, and growing human water demand.

Researchers used advanced climate models to identify when and where water supplies are likely to enter unprecedented scarcity conditions. The analysis indicates that significant portions of the world, including parts of North America, the Mediterranean region, southern Africa and other drought-prone zones, could experience these extreme shortages soon. The study suggests that the first emergence of these conditions has already begun in some regions and will become more widespread if greenhouse gas emissions remain high.

The term “day-zero drought” refers to moments when water levels in major storage systems are so depleted that it becomes difficult for municipal systems to reliably supply water to homes and businesses and taps may no longer deliver. Scientists emphasize that such events are no longer theoretical future risks but near-term realities in several regions of the planet.

The researchers also underscore that climate change acts to accelerate these conditions, meaning that rising global temperatures contribute directly to the severity, frequency, and geographic spread of extreme water scarcity. Urban areas and densely populated regions are particularly vulnerable, with infrastructure and water management systems already strained by rising demand.

Overall, the CNN coverage highlights that without significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions and major improvements in water resource planning and management, day-zero droughts could pose serious challenges to water security for hundreds of millions of people well before mid-century.
